Spicy Holiday Sangria

Nothing says celebration like a large glass of traditional sangria! Fruity and tangy with a slight heat, this holiday recipe for sangria has all the authentic Mexican flavor you will love.


  • 1 (12 ounce) jar

    HERDEZ® Red Guajillo Chile Mexican Cooking Sauce

  • 3/4 cup


  • 1 1/4 cups


  • 3 whole

    star anise

  • 2 whole

    cinnamon sticks

  • 1 medium size

    orange, thinly sliced

  • 1 medium size

    apple, thinly sliced

  • 1 medium size

    pear, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup

    seedless grapes, sliced in half

  • 1 bottle

    Tempranillo Spanish wine or other dry red wine

  1. In medium saucepan over medium-low heat, combine HERDEZ® Red Guajillo Chile Mexican Cooking Sauce, water, sugar, star anise and cinnamon sticks. Stir and bring to a simmer 10 minutes. Remove from heat and cool 20 minutes. 

  2. In large size glass pitcher, add all sliced fruits and red wine. Transfer star anise and cinnamon sticks to pitcher. Strain guajillo sugar sauce. Pour strained sauce into pitcher with other ingredients and stir well to combine. 

  3. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight to blend flavors. 

  4. To serve, remove star anise and cinnamon sticks from pitcher. Pour sangria into ice filled wine glasses, place pieces of fruit from pitcher into glasses and enjoy!
